How to move the pieces

  • King: moves 1 square in any direction horizontally, vertically, diagonally.
  • Queen: moves any number of squares in a straight line or diagonally.
  • Rook: moves horizontally or vertically, unlimited number of squares.
  • Bishop: moves diagonally, unlimited number of squares.
  • Knight: moves 2 L-shaped squares in one direction and 1 square at right angles, can jump over other pieces.
  • Pawn: moves 1 square straight, captures diagonal pieces; can move 2 squares on the first turn.

Basic rules

  • Checkmate and checkmate: when the king is attacked, it is called checkmate; if there are no more valid moves, it is checkmate.
  • Castling: Move the king and rook at the same time to protect the king, performed when the king or rook has not been moved and the middle squares are empty.
  • En Passant: A pawn can capture an opponent's pawn that moves 2 squares the first time it passes through the attacking square.
  • Pawn Promotion: When a pawn reaches the end rank, it can be transformed into a Queen, Rook, Bishop or Knight.
  • Can be played in real time or with turns depending on the mode.

The game ends when:

  • Checkmate the opponent's king.
  • The opponent surrenders.
  • Draw when there are no more valid moves or there are not enough pieces to checkmate.
